DIY Rustic Jewellery Hanger

So, I have been seeing these around  pinterest a lot lately...

...and with needing good display ideas for The Corner Store, I decided to give it a go!

You will need:

  • Large wooden frame
  • Chicken wire (I used 5mm bird cage wire, available from the hardware store)
  • Sandpaper
  • Spray primer (or cheap white spray paint)
  • Your choice of colour spray paint
  • Staple gun
  • Pliers
  • Sexy male helper *optional but highly recommended*

How to:

1. Remove the middle of the frame (glass, backing and picture if any) and sand back any varnish or paint.

2. Wipe your frame over with a clean, dry cloth to remove dust from sanding. Give it a coat of spray primer (or white paint) and leave to dry for one hour.

3. Once dry, paint your frame with the colour spray paint you chose (I did mine sky blue), then leave it to dry (again) for one hour.

4. Give your frame another coat of paint if needed, letting it dry once again, then use some soft-ish sandpaper to lightly rub back paint for a rustic or shabby chic look. How much you sand it back, or whether you do at all, is entirely up to you.

5. Once you have reached the desired effect with your frame, turn it over and place your chicken wire over the back. Put a brick on one side to stop it rolling up if you have to and hold the other over the edge of your frame, using it as a guide to cut chicken wire to fit the back. I'm too unco to hold the wire flat and cut it at the same time, so this is where having a sexy male helper comes in handy. I used this one:

6. Use the staple gun to attach the chicken wire to the back of your frame. Trim off excess wire and use pliers to bend back sharp bits and then you are done!

I know its not the easiest or quickest DIY project (or the safest either, for that matter. I cut myself on a piece of glass and stabbed myself numerous times with sharp wire) but I think it is well worth it! I love my frames. I'm going to donate one to the shop, keep one to use as a message/inspiration board in my sewing room/office and I may sell the rest (if anyone wants them!).

Ahh - bright, rustic DIY goodness!

What a busy day!

Hello lovely bloggers,
Today has been a MASSIVE day for me in the best and most creative kind of way. I got so much stuff done that I don't know where to start as far as posting goes, so I thought I'd maybe write a little, show a lot!

Here is what I've been up to:

Yellow Shabby Rose Hair Clips

Custom order crochet necklace for my good friend Amira

Purple baby set for my cousin and his fiance's new arrival

Blue and white gingham dress (fostering my new love for ric-rac!)

Hope this has inspired you to get creative! What have you been up to today? Anything exciting?

When things don't go to plan - refashion!

Ever had a day when absolutely nothing goes to plan? Including your sewing projects? Being the "take it and run" girl I am, I always rush into projects without fully thinking them through or reading the instructions properly and quite often this is when a disaster will happen!

Luckily, we have our good old friend "refashion" to come to our rescue at times like these, and that's exactly what she did the other day when the fat quarter pillowcase dress I made turned out uneven and unsellable.

I was trying to combine The Mother Huddle's Fat quarter pillowcase dress with their knot front pillowcase dress and didn't read the whole way through the instructions before starting to sew. I thought the way I did it would work, but I made the diagonal cuts for under the arms too big and when I put the split in the material for the tie, it was not centred and didn't allow for the dress to gather enough to look good. Luckily, I had an idea up my sleeve!

I just chopped the top off, re-hemmed and ran a few lines of shirring across the top and -voila! A cute, shabby-chic skirt to use up the gorgeous fat quarter bundle I bought from Always Knitting and Sewing on Ebay.

This skirt is on sale now at The Corner Store. If you're in North-Eastern NSW, drop by Evans Head and check it out!

Fat Quarter Bundle and Package-y Goodness!

I love recieving packages in the mail from online shopping! It really does make you feel like it's Christmas, doesn't it? So you can imagine how stoked I was when this gorgeous fat quarter bundle showed up on my doorstep on Friday!

I absolutely love the blue and green colour scheme of this little bundle which I purchased from Always Knitting and Sewing on Ebay. They had great customer service, the parcel was sent quickly and the fabric has turned out to be exactly as described and pictured.

I'm thinking that a fat quarter pillowcase dress is in order to make good use of this co-ordinate-y goodness! What would I do without all the great ideas from The Mother Huddle? Seriously. My only problem now will be selling the creation this bundle of joy will go into - so hard to say goodbye to beautiful things, right?
