The Clumsy Girl's Guide to Winged Eyeliner

I would just like to start off by saying there is absolutely no way that I am a beauty blogger, nor will I ever become a beauty blogger. For the most part, that stuff bores me and I'm rubbish at it. Absolutely rubbish! However, one thing I have always envied is normal women's abilities to do winged eyeliner that is actually even and pointing off in the same direction on each eye. I mentioned this to my gorgeous cousin who is a make up queen, and she gave me a quick little tip for doing nice, even winged eyeliner that she used to use when she first started out. Lucky you guys, because I am going to share it with you today! Please ignore the horrendous way my face looks in these photos, I was trying to best showcase what I was doing - not exactly my best angle!

The secret to perfect eyeliner? Sticky tape!

I know, shockingly simple, right? But does it actually work? Follow the steps and see for yourself:

1. Cut a small piece of sticky tape, and play around with it in your fingers to make it lose some of it's sticky. You want it to be just sticky enough to stick flat, without basically supergluing itself to your face. This is so when you pull it off your face, it doesn't hurt and is not too hard when your hands and face are already covered in foundation and whatnot!

2. Align the bottom of the sticky tape with the outside corner of your eye, pointing up and out to the corner of your eyebrow. Slipping the tape under your bottom lashes, smooth it flat onto your face so that the top edge of the tape is nestled right next to your eyebrow (mine are super thin on the ends so I'm sorry if you can barely see them).

3. Use a liquid eyeliner to frame your eye, starting thin on the inside corner of your eye and building it up towards the outer edge, following on with your kicks. Try and make the line as even and fluid as you can (obviously I didn't leave mine looking like that^^^ I smoothed it over when I was done with a wet cotton bud). Here is the great thing - you don't have to worry about how neat your kicks are because they sort out themselves! All you have to do is make each side is an even length and the top edge nice and smooth :)

4. let your eyeliner dry a little, peel off the stickytape and touch up any bits that need touching up, before continuing on with your make up routine!

Isn't it great? I can't believe I can actually do proper winged eyeliner now! And it actually doesn't look like a five year old did it! Now that I have a little trick up my sleeve I feel confident enough to buy some proper nice eyeliner. The stuff i've been using is $5 crappy k-mart eyeliner because I didn't want to spend money on stuff I had to wash off every morning. Yay for decent make up! And yay for the fact that I have been using tinted moisturiser rather than foundation (nearly) every day! My skin feels so much healthier and smoother since I cut foundation out of my morning routine. Loving it! Do you have any other neat little tricks I can try out with my make up? I suck at being a girl and would love your advice!

And just because everyone deserves a beautiful duck face selfie to brighten up their day:

Isn't this just the sexiest face ever? You're totally welcome!

An A-Z of Me: B is for...

B is for Books!

Ahh, books! Who doesn't love the crisp sound of a turning page, or the musty smell of a well-read favourite? I am a bit of a series lover, myself. One book is never enough, and even at the end of a series I still find myself feeling empty with the loss of cherished characters. When I am reading a good book, it is all-consuming. The story and the characters trickle into every aspect of my life, feeding my over-active imagination with pictures which, over time grow to include my own image in them. Anyone else do that? Find yourself dreaming that you are in the book you were reading before you fell asleep, glasses still on, drooling on the page? I must admit, I even day dream about the fantasy worlds I am reading! Shocker!

Anyway, here are a few of my favourites, in absolutely no order whatsoever (that would be comparable to picking a favourite child! Or chocolate flavour! Unspeakable!):

Harry Potter

Ahh, my sweet, sweet babies! Betcha didn't see that one coming, eh? There's no way you could tell from my Harry Potter related crafts that I am obsessed! Honestly though, I think these are the stand-out books of my generation. In writing these books, J. K. Rowling (that clever, clever woman) united the world! People old and young alike have read and enjoyed these books and watched the subsequent movies countless times. I know I have read them something crazy like 5 times and am planning on reading them again this winter, curled up on the couch with my Harry Potter mug full of steaming hot chocolate. Plus, not a week goes by that one of the movies isn't played in my house, and quoted line for line! I don't know what it is about this magical world which J. K. Rowling created, but I just cannot get enough of it! She is brilliant and so are the books. And if you haven't read them, what are you even doing on my blog?

Wuthering Heights

I know it's a stretch away from Harry Potter, but honestly - I am head over heels in love with this book! I first picked it up in year 11 to use as an extra text in Extension English. I wasn't expecting much - it was just a dusty, old book on the list of recommended readings, after all! But I have since read it three times and still would read it again! This is by no means an easy book to read (in fact, you'll probably have to read it twice to understand it) but once you get used to the language, it is clear that Emily Bronte is a literary genius! I can't even describe the way that Wuthering Heights makes me feel - all I know is that it is the most intense, passionate and enthralling love story I have ever read! I often think about a few of the quotes in it, "I cannot live without my life, I cannot live without my soul" “If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.” “He's more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” and think, wow - did Emily Bronte jump into my brain and pick out exactly how I feel about Jake and put it on paper? The intensity of Cathy's love for Heathcliff, and Heathcliff's for Cathy is something I know all to well, being the hyper-emotional person that I am, and that, I think, is what so lures me into this story.

The Da Vinci Code

This might be a bit of a controversial book to put on here, or maybe even an eye-roller, but this book literally changed my life. You see, I went to a Catholic primary school where I was basically brain-washed into thinking that Catholicism was the only religion there was and hat all atheists would go to hell when they died and burn in a pool of hot lava for all of eternity. Not a very great concept for a kid to be fed day-in-day-out in the peak of their mental development. A friend of mine, when we were in year 6, gave me this book to read and immediately my eyes were opened! Not only did I love the story in the book, I loved the idea of other religions and of atheists not actually being horrible, demonic people, and of Christianity actually being a religion which borrows all its bits and pieces from other religions. It lead me to research different religions a little more thoroughly and make my own decisions on my beliefs. Decisions which have changed slightly over time, to bring me to the position I am currently in as far as "the big questions" are concerned. Many people aren't into ths book, I know, but I am and it has led to some great things happening in my life.

Cloudstreet

Cloudstreet is one of the best Aussie books ever. It follows the lives of two families, the Lambs and the Pickles, who share a great big house. These two families could not be more different, but the ways in which Tim Winton weaves their lives together are absolutely awe-inspiring. Set in the time of Robert Menzies' Prime Ministership in Australia, Cloudstreet gives a voice to the minority groups in Australia. This book, while possessing a deeper meaning, retains an entirely raw entertainment quality which is greatly appreciated by the reader. I would recommend this book to anyone, but think that it would especially strike a chord with fellow Australians.

The Millenium Trilogy
This is another series by a literary genius who sadly passed away long before his time. If you like a good mystery/thriller, then I strongly recommend that you read these books. They will not disappoint! I also strongly recommend that you do not watch the American version of the film under any circumstances. It is terrible. Absolutely terrible! I have the Swedish versions here ready to watch (I gave them to dad for Christmas. Gotta love a present which everyone can enjoy!) but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Promise I'll give you all the verdict when I do though! Oh, and another thing - if you are sensitive to issues such as domestic abuse and rape, you will want to pass on this one. It is quite graphically detailed and not at all for the feint-hearted! If you can deal with that stuff though, read them1 You'll thank me for it!

And since this post is going way too long, honourable mentions to John Marsden's The Tomorrow Series and The Ellie Chronicles, which are great Aussie books about a group of teenagers trying to survive in the Aussie bush after Australia has been invaded, to Anne McCaffrey's Dragons of Pern Series, and to Jean M. Auel's Eath's Children series which al history-lovers would enjoy immensely! As well as any other people who love a good story!

Friday's Finds: Tugun Vinnies and a Little Question

I FINALLY got a decent op-shopping adventure done this week! Seriously, I thought the day would never come when the Gold Coast op-shop fairies gave me a decent haul! I have been here two months with nothing but the slimmest of pickings at the op-shops I was able to visit on my way home from uni on the bus, but this week, with the help of my new car, I was finally able to try somewhere new and boy did it pay off!

I was amazed at how clean and beautiful the displays at Tugun Vinnies were when I walked in the door. A lot of effort goes into the presentation of their wares - that much is for sure! There was quite a lot of good stuff in there, including some mid-century furniture, a big pine dresser and a heap of good quality clothes and homewares. The only downside I could find to this beautiful Vinnies was the prices.

Absolute rip-off central.

One of the things I hate about op shops these days is how much they are able to charge for anything they think hipsters, or stupid people as I like to call them, will pay for anything old. And half the time they get it wrong anyway and the stuff they think is crap is actually the stuff I would pay good money for. And that drives me mad! It drives me so mad, in fact, that I started making a vlog about it today. I obviously haven't posted it though because a) I hate seeing/hearing myself on screen and b) I am a total pussy and have no idea whether you guys would actually like to see my mug on your screen talking crap about op shops and how hipsters are taking over the world. Although my video isn't nearly as exciting as I just made out it was. Crap. Back to the stuff I bought?

Okay, so the belt and books were just little tie bits I paid way too much for and didn't really need, but this sewing pattern is absolutely to. die. for. and was only $1. I haven't checked all the pieces yet, but even if they aren't all there,  love the picture on the front and am sure I can find a use for it anyway ;)

The "Dolly Dolly" jacket is absolutely gorgeous! I'm about 90% sure that it's vintage and I love the way it fits, with the shoulder pads and the flared peplum-like waist! It's going to look amazing with jeans this winter :)

The darling Katies blouse is almost definitely 80's, judging by the ginormous shoulder pads and the fit of the sleeves! I love the detail on the collar and shoulders and wil definitely be wearing this a lot tucked into skirts, high waisted pants and untucked with jeans.

Have you had any op shop buys lately?
And would you be interested in seeing me do a vlog? I'd love to hear your opinions and ideas of what I could post about!

DIY: Harry Potter Sharpie Mug

I will be the first to admit that I am jumping on the sharpie mug bandwagon a little late, but I swear I have good reason for it! You see, while Pinterest almost imploded with sharpie mug DIY tutorials over christmas, it was about 40 degrees C here in Australia, so you can imagine how un-excited I was about hot chocolate at the time! Even now, as I type this in Autumn, it is still about 27 degrees. Nowhere near cold enough for hot chocolate!

Nonetheless, sick of the sticky humidity we are experiencing in Australia right now, I am dreaming of cool winter days snuggled up on the lounge with a good book or a movie, mug of delicious, warm, milky libation in hand. Cue Pinterest and this little project!

If you know me at all, or have been reading this blog for a while, you will know that I am a HUGE Harry Potter fanatic! So of course, when I thought of doing a movie-themed sharpie mug, that was the natural choice of subject!

Now, if you have been living under a rock (don't worry, I can frequently be found under rocks) here is how you do this:  write/draw whatever you want on your mug, then bake at 180 degrees C for 30 minutes so that the sharpie design won't wash off.

I decided to incorporate a few things from different Harry Potter books/movies into my mug:

Deathly Hallows symbol

My next tattoo favourite quote ever

And my favourite part of the mug:
The Grim! (and a little lightening bolt on the handle)

This project was super quick, easy and fun to do and I'm stoked with the results. I might have to whack on a Harry Potter movie this afternoon when it cools down, and whip up some hot chocolate to enjoy in my new mug! What would you draw on your mug if you gave this project a go? Or have you done it already?

An A to Z of Me: A is for...

A is for Australia

Growing up in Australia is learning a completely unique version of the English language. "Ta" and "cheers" replace "thank you", "g'day" replaces "hello" and if ever you agree with someone, you reply "bloody oath!".

Growing up in Australia is eating Vegemite on sandwiches, on toast, even on your mac and cheese and thinking it's the most delicious thing in the world. (It is!)

Growing up in Australia is not riding kangaroos to school, but seeing them on the side of the road as mum creeps the car past, terrified they'll jump out in front of her.

Growing up in Australia means, if a word can be shortened, you shorten it! Especially names. Barry is Baz, Sharon is Shaz, Richard is Dick, Robert is Robbo, and if your first name is already short, we'll call you by your last name or make up an entirely new one for ya.

Growing up in Australia is eating sausage sangas hot off the barbie and having fresh prawns in the sweltering Christmas heat.

Growing up in Australia means that everyone is called "mate" whether you like them or not.

Growing up in Australia is going to school in 40 degrees Celsius heat, while kids in America and Europe are having snow days. Or wagging school to hit the beach.

Growing up in Australia is being woken up at sparrow's fart (the crack of dawn) by birds that laugh. KOOOKAKAKAKAKAKA! (My impression of a kookaburra)

Growing up in Australia is not knowing what the bloody hell a shrimp is, or why every foreign person you meet talks about whacking them on the barbie in a horrible attempt at your accent.

Growing up in Australia is wearing thongs on your feet and coming home sunburnt for about 3/4 of the year.

Growing up in Australia means taking a public holiday for the Queen's birthday, when it's not even her actual birthday. Any excuse for a public holiday here!

Growing up in Australia is never seeing snow, but I sure as hell know what a bushfire, flood or cyclone looks like!

Growing up in Australia is not being allowed to talk while the cricket or the footy is on, but your dad spends the whole time yelling at the TV!

Growing up in Australia is not knowing temperatures below 0, and still whinging our butts off in winter.

Growing up in Australia is spending all your time outdoors. In coastal Australia, at the beach swimming, boogie-boarding, fishing or surfing and coming home so tired that you fall straight asleep.

Growing up in Australia is experiencing four seasons in one day at any given time of the year.

Growing up in Australia is a unique experience. Whether your from the outback or the coast, the city or the country, growing up in Australia is going to affect you in some way.

Growing up in Australia is the best kind of up-bringing I ever could have hoped for. Australia, you have shaped me into the person I am today and I thank you for it! I wouldn't have it any other way.

Goodbye GFC

As many of you will be aware, Google is getting rid of GFC and Google Reader for all non-Blogger blogs as of July 1st. While Little Foal will not be directly affected by this change, being a Blogger blog, I and many other bloggers are switching over to Bloglovin' as our main reader now, in order to be better prepared for whatever Google throws us us!

I know that many of the blogs I follow using GFC are not hosted with Blogger, and so switched all of my reading list over to Bloglovin' so all my favourite blogs would remain in the same place. There is nothing more annoying than having 47334596435 internet pages up just so that you can catch up on your favourite blogs, so I heartliy invite you to do the same!

You can follow Little Foal on Bloglovin' by clicking the widget in my sidebar, or by searching Little Foal in Bloglovin'. You will also still be able to follow me by e-mail, with GFC (if you so wish) or add me to your Google +, as all of my posts are shared there.

I think you will find if you do switch to Bloglovin' for your blog reading pleasure, it is incredibly user-friendly, and the layout is clean, simple and pretty making it super easy to keep track of unread posts, and even letting you organise the blogs you follow into groups!

Good luck with the transition, everyone and I hope to see you all following me on Bloglovin' soon!

Life Lately: Visitors and the Quiksilver Pro

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

So, I think it is safe to say that I have just had one of the best weeks of my life! Why, you might ask? Well, I'll tell you why and you better be prepared to be blown away ;)
(Well, not really but I think this week has been pretty exciting!)

A little peak at some of the crowd at the Quiksilver Pro

It al started last Friday with my mum and my sister coming up to stay with me for the night. We had a gorgeous little girls night, which was much needed and appreciated, with lots of laughs and gossip to be had all around. The next day my dad, my brother and Jake also came up, and we met them at Snapper Rocks for the Quiksilver pro.

My brother has been looking forward to this week ever since I first made my mind up that Coolangatta was where I wanted to live. You see, my family is pretty big on surfing and my brother is the cutest little grom there ever was, so big sis moving to one of the most famous surfing beaches in Australia is definitely what one could call a big deal in my family.

The Grom

Although Kirra Beach isn't what se used to be, when the conditions are right this baby goes aaawwwfffff! Plus, this place is loaded with other little surfing beaches, such as D'bah, Snapper Rocks and Greenmount which all make this place a bit of a mecca in the surfing world. Since Kirra beach turned a little crappy, the famous Quiksilver Pro moved to Snapper Rocks in Rainbow Bay (still walking distance from my house) although a few heats this year, including the men's finals, were held at Kirra to take advantage of the nice, clean barrels that were rolling through there this week thanks to the massive storms we have just had.

My first ever Quiksilver Pro did not disappoint!

On Saturday, mum, Shoni and I got to Snapper Rocks just in time for the Roxy semi-finals (women's). I was super excited because three Aussies made it to the semis and the final was an all Aussie affair with Tyler Wright (from Jake's hometown of Lennox Head) taking out 1st place in the BEST heat of surfing I have ever seen! It was one of those heats where we were on the edges of our seats as the lead was tossed between the two girls with every wave they surfed. In the end it came down to the last 10 seconds of the competition, where Tyler blew the competition out of the water with her massive turns, so to speak!

Tyler in the water, and with her trophy. Can you believe she is only 18?

Next up the Super Groms had their turn in the water, and who else could possibly take out the victory other than Tyler's little brother Mikey Wright? Honestly, there is some major surfing talent in that family! Their big bro, Owen is also a pro (and one of my faves) but he unfortunately didn't make it past the fourth round this year. Bummer, because I was getting my hopes up for a all-Wright affair at this comp!

Mikey ripping it up at the pro, and after winning the title "King of the Groms"
Shoni's claim to fame? She has him on Facebook!

Despite Owen Wright not making it a triple-first by the Wright family, the men's comp at the pro did not disappoint, with two perfect 10's scored in the competition both by current world champion, Joel Parkinson (one for an awesome tube ride in the semi-finals against Michel Bourez) and 11 time champion, Kelly Slater just scraping past him in the finals (which I sadly didn't get to watch because I was at uni. Boo!)

Jake and I enjoying the pro

Overall, this week was great. I came within metres of some of my biggest crushes heroes of all time, and The Quikie Pro has totally got me back in the surfer-girl mind-set that I somehow lost a few years back. So much so that my dad is about to start shaping me my own custom board!

While dad was here, he also found me a new car! You can imagine my excitement over finally sorting crap out with the insurance company and getting back behind the wheel after having my accident a whopping 2 months ago! No more 2 hour bus trips to uni, yay!

The only downside to this week was the complete kill-joy called heat stroke which saw me miss uni and the comp on Monday. I was so dehydrated that I couldn't eat my breakfast and started dry retching Monday morning as I attempted to get ready for uni. I almost passed out at the breakfast table and was very quickly ushered back to bed with a big glass of water and some panadol to get well for the quarter finals of the pro on Tuesday (because obviously that's the most important thing, right?). Thankfully, a day of rest and a few litres of water was all I needed to get better, because Tuesday's surfing was absolutely amazing! Having a peeling face right now is so worth it for the amazing week I had with my family. If anyone knows of a good way to hide the fact that your face is all dry, patchy and scaly though I would appreciate the advice!

Yes, that is Mick Fanning preparing for the quarter finals!
And yes, that is me sitting just metres away from him on the rocks in the top right corner of the pic!
You can only see my legs because the grom is a shit photograper ;)

I forget who this is (Matt Wiklinson maybe?) but he sure was easy on the eyes ;)

My favourite surfer of all time, Julian Wilson

And another one of him, since he is so easy to look at!
I swear I love him for his surfing, not just his looks!

Kelly Slater nearly snuck past me, the sneaky devil! That's why this pic is a bit out of focus.

And another one of Mick Fanning, just for good measure and because you can clearly see me in this one! (On the left)

First ever WIWT post!

Stoked at the fact I'm finally doing this post! ^^

I have wanted to do a What I Wore Today post for so long! Basically ever since I first started blogging, but I could never get up the courage to do one. I by no means consider myself "trendy" or "fashionable" but I do LOVE clothes, and as my style is evolving, I would love to document that on my blog. You can thank Erica for persuading me to finally do this, whether she knows it or not, as she proved to me that you don't have to be a model to write a post about clothes, all you need is confidence.

When I was younger, I was a total tomboy as far as clothes are concerned. It was boardies and a t-shirt all the way for me! I liked playing with dolls and what-not, but I had absolutely no interest in clothes or hair or makeup or any of that jazz. That all didn't come until high school for me, and my sister often jokes that it's a wonder I ever learnt how to dress myself properly.

These days, however, you can usually find me in something vintage, lacy and feminine. I am struggling at the moment to find the balance between dressing feminine and floaty and dressing to be taken seriously, which I feel is important in an academic setting such as university, but I think with this outfit, I've done alright.

Most the outfits you will see me wearing on the blog will have some second hand, vintage or handmade element to them, as that is what my style (and budget) is all about at the moment, and it's also what Little Foal is all about for me as a blog. Hopefully I can give you a good idea of how to dress as cheaply as possible, if nothing else!

So, the outfit:

Top: Fashion Fair hand-me-down
Skirt: Ice
Shoes: K-mart
Jewellery: All gifted

Mum turned up with an armload of hand-me-downs from my aunty and a lady at work the other day which absolutely had me jumping for joy! I have a non-official ban on clothes shopping happening at the moment until I have bought a few things for the house that I am in desperate need of, so hand-me-downs are incredibly welcome from me right now! The top is hideous left out, with a big long tail thingy trailing down one side of your body, but I think it does quite alright tucked into this skirt! I felt really good in this outfit all day today, even though it's nothing special and it was the perfect way to mix my love of lace with a slightly more sophisticated look for uni.

What do you think? Have I done alright with my first outfit post? I sure hope so!

Friday's Finds: Do you like... cheese?

Okay, so I might be a little too obsessed with Channing Tatum right now, eagerly awaiting GI Joe 2 to hit the screens in Australia, so everything is turning into a quote from one of his movies for me right now, including the title of this post!

Anyway, how great is this cheese platter I found at the Salvos yesterday?

It's been slim pickings for the last few weeks at the two op shops I am able to visit at the bus changeover on my way home from uni, so I was stoked to walk in there yesterday and see this little beaut. He will look great out on the table if I ever make enough friends to invite them round for fondue/dinner/anything-but-wine and cheese.

I also saw some great pieces of furniture which I would have taken home in a heart beat if I wasn't catching the bus home to my tiny little apartment. One particular thing which caught my eye was an antique bar cart with fold down table top which opened up to a really nice size. It was gorgeous, but I had to just settle on the cheese platter for now, since there are other pieces of furniture that I need to put in the limited space in our house.

Another thing that caught my eye was a set of blue willow mugs which I would have loved to add to my collection, but they weren't vintage and Lifeline had them priced at $5 each! My whole damn teapot was only $14! I kindly let the man behind the counter know that those pieces were overpriced, but I doubt the problem will be rectified. Lifeline seem to like overcharging for anything remotely decent, in my opinion.

Have you had any luck thrifting lately? Any pieces like my bar cart which you had to leave behind? It's a total heart-breaker when that happens, isn't it?

Calling All Aussie Vintage Sellers!

Recently, while looking for vintage on Etsy, I realised how expensive buying vintage clothes and homewares from overseas and paying shipping fees can get, and wondered why it is that I don't know of many Australian vintage sellers to buy from. Surely they are out there somewhere, right? This is when an idea struck me - I might not be the only Aussie looking for affordable vintage online, and coming up empty-handed. What if I created a Directory of Australian Vintage Sellers on my blog? This way, I will have a nice, neat list of affordable vintage sellers to choose from next time I have the online shopping bug, and better yet - if I can get some vintage sellers with actual shop spaces to join the directory, I could go and try on all the vintage goodness! But, I can't do all this alone, and this is where you come in:

If you, or someone you know, sells affordable vintage online please contact me at little-foal@hotmail.com to be included in my Australian Vintage Sellers Directory. If you have a storefront, then that is a bonus and I want to hear from you too!

The only requirements of being included in this directory are:

  1. You are an Australian business
  2. The vintage you sell must be good quality
  3. The vintage you sell must be affordable
  4. You must display the small button on my sidebar on your blog/website somewhere if possible
  5. I must have some way of reviewing the quality of the items you sell.
I look forward to hearing from some fantastic Aussie vintage sellers soon! Please spread the word if you can so I can create a comprehensive directory of quality vintage sellers. It would mean a lot to me!

Also, I am thinking of, if you join the directory, doing guest posts, reviews or feature posts with the vintage sellers for extra exposure for you and extra vintage goodness for me and my readers. I can't wait to embark on this fantastic vintage adventure, and I hope you will join me in it too :)
